Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 6 in C
Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C
Narrator: TBC
Conductor: Peter Ash
A programme charting Schubert’s symphonic development from classical to romantic with two symphonies in the sunny key of C major.
When Schubert wrote his Symphony No. 6 in 1818 aged 21 he described it as ‘great” because it broke new bounds. It was hugely influenced by Rossini and Haydn. But by the the time he composed his 9th Symphony eight years later, the earlier symphony seemed modest by comparison. The new “Great C Major” work was conceived on a majestic scale and stands as one of the ultimate achievements of the Romantic era.
